Delhi Rises to Toxic Haze Following Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "severe" category.

Extremely High Air Quality Readings

Multiple areas of the city registered an pollution measurement above 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the safe limit established by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of eighteen hundred, amounting to fifteen to twenty times higher than healthy limits.

Firecracker Prohibition and Recent Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, authorities had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of fireworks during celebrations due to their major role to the deadly smog that covers the city as colder weather begins.

Nevertheless in recent months, the newly elected regional leadership petitioned the highest court to seek a relaxation of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a balance between "heritage and public health".

Legal Decision and Implementation

To the disappointment of medical and ecological campaigners, judges approved the request, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during specific time windows throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was extensive violation of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital registered air quality peaking around the night hours to some of the worst levels observed during Diwali in at least the past three years.

Cross-Border Effects

Extensive ignition of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating air quality in their urban centers on pollutants originating in neighboring India following the events.

Long-Standing Pollution Crisis

The dangerously high concentrations of air contamination in Delhi have continued as a serious problem for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Near celebratory seasons, the concentration of hazardous particulate matter in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the most severe readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was previously considered as the globally most contaminated city.

Multiple Contamination Factors

The situation in the capital is attributed to a mix of various sources including transportation pollution, dust, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from crop residue ignition in neighbouring states of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, rural residents regularly burn crop residue to clear them quickly, producing toxic haze that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as cooler air arrives.

Medical and Economic Impact

Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million inhabitants living in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to various investigations.

This pollution results in increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

The pollution is calculated to be causing approximately 10k early fatalities annually in the capital.
