Uche Sparks Comfortable Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever continental campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are learning very quickly. Without star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a comfortable win that all but secures them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS ought to be sufficient to secure direct passage to the knockout stages, particularly following a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season were no match against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Control Established from the Start
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
